I want to bring my dog on a trip soon. I noticed you put Maddy’s food in the pack, not in your food pack/barrel. Has dog food ever been a problem for critters on your trips?
Just wanted to say thanks for all of your extremely helpful videos. My bud and me are going on a 15 day trip to the boundary waters on june 10th and I honestly didn’t know what to bring at all. Luckily i stumbled upon your videos and completely outfitted our entire trip based on your gear and food walkthroughs (with a few modifications to make it more affordable). Now were ready to go. Thanks again. Maddythegoose rocks!!
@djSpinege It’s an Arcteryx Bora 80. Pretty big pack but it does the trick for all occasions and is tough as nails. At some point I’ll likely get a smaller pack for the weekend trips but to be honest the extra size and weigh doesn’t bother me on canoe trips.
@idrosynth I tend to do portages with a single carry when I can, the exception is if I’m soloing for over a week and my pack is on the heavy side with food. As for how I carry everything when I do a single, you can see it all in this video: “Solo Canoe Trip 2009 (1 of 3)” at the 3:33 mark. Perhaps I’ll take that clip and make it into it’s own vid since this isn’t the first time I’ve been asked this question. Hope that helps.
great vid thanks just wondered how do u pack ur canoe what other gear do u take with u and what about waste (the human kind) how do u deal with those issues of weather to poop and scoop
Wow, you got some great lightweight gear there, I particularly like the sleeping bag, it’s about a tenth of the size of mine. For what I’ve seen so far great vids! Did you ever put up more info on how you prepare your food, the dehydrating etc.
thanks
A canoe is a small narrow boat, typically human-powered, though it may also be powered by sails or small electric or gas motors. Canoes are usually pointed at both bow and stern and are normally open on top, but can be decked over i.e. covered, similar to a kayak. In its human-powered form, the canoe is propelled by the use of paddles, usually by two people. Paddlers face in the direction of travel, either seated on supports in the hull, or kneeling directly upon the hull. Paddling can be contrasted with rowing, where the rowers usually face away from the direction of travel and use mounted oars though a wide canoe can be fitted with oarlocks and rowed. Paddles may be single-bladed or double-bladed.

@LukeWarmHand I have filled it on an eight day solo trip with Maddy. The extra food, fuel land dog supplies add up with no restocking.

As soon as you said Maddie her head perked up from the couch!

The little door must be the easy access hatch for Narnia.

January 7th, 2012 - 12:41
Hey Just wondering what you do with all the stuff you kept aside for inside the canoe when your portaging? Do you single portage or double? Thanks.

Awesome set of gear videos. I spent three summers guiding canoe trips a couple years ago and I still learned new things from these

This is an interesting video. But i find my self totally fascinated by what uses the little door behind you…

I haven’t gotten around to it yet, but I do plan on doing a video on food prep this season. It’s a popular request.
