Types of outrigger canoes
A six-person outrigger canoe
A variety of boat types exist, including the OC1, OC2, OC3, OC4 and OC6 (with the respective number of paddlers using a single hull outrigger canoe), and the DC12 or OC12 (with twelve paddlers using a double hull outrigger canoe, two six person canoes rigged together like a catamaran). The shorthand form is also commonly written as V1, V2, V6, etc. (where V refers to vaa).
Single hull outrigger canoes have an ama (outrigger float) connected to the main hull by spars called iako (Hawaiian), iato (Tahitian), or kiato (Mori). The ama, which is usually rigged on the left side, provides stability. The paddlers need to be careful to avoid leaning too far on the opposite side of the ama, as that may cause the canoe to capsize (huli or lumai).
There are also outrigger sailing canoes ranging from smaller three or four person canoes to large voyaging canoes. Sailing canoes may have one ama, two amas (one on each Click to continue
Summer Skiing
Although the main skiing season lasts from late autumn to early May, it is still possible to ski even at the height of summer. While the options for August are limited, this can be more than made up for in the Port du Soleil area by other activities. Catered chalets, which are mainly used for skiing holidays, can make an excellent base any time of year, and the area offers many alternatives.
Take Les Gets and its surroundings for example. This charming alpine village is the centre of a mountain biker's paradise, offering over 500 miles of trails to explore. And if you just enjoy natural beauty, you can safely wander through well-marked hikes and footpaths. Many lifts are open all year round. A catered chalet, such as those offered by The Chalet Experience (in the process of changing over to Mountain and Tradition) would be a welcome retreat after fun and exercise in such breathtaking surroundings.
However, being out in the open at high altitudes in the height of Click to continue
Britons hoping to lead the pack in white water rafting
Article by Kerry Roberts
The British team has high hopes of a medal at the 2011 World White Water Rafting Championship in Costa Rica.
White water rafting in the UK might be more well-known as a classic stag weekend activity, but riding rough water in an inflatable dinghy is much more than just a laugh on the water, it's a proper wild water sport with its own World Championship.
As it happens, us Brits are pretty good when it comes to rafting on the white stuff. Team GB won third place at the last world championships behind Brazil and Canada. The team is now in Costa Rica hoping for repeat of this success at the 2011 World White Water Rafting Championship.
Over 50 teams from around the world will be competing on the ferocious waters of the Pacuare river. This is all a far cry from the usual wild water rafting experience we have in the UK. Current British team member Paskell Blackwell is more used to running the rapids at the Lee Valley White Water Centre Click to continue

White Water Rafting Adventures
Family Adventure can be had by the entire family in White Water. If you have kids from 12 on up you will want to consider this adventure for your next vacation. I highly recommend Cataract Canyon.
Cataract Canyon is on the Colorado River before the flow of the river has been choked off by man made dams. You will be thrilled by the ride that cannot be recreated in any amusement park. The river can reach extreme flows during when a lot of snow has fallen during the winter months.
The White Water Rafting Adventure in the Colorado River here is in big water. The rapids here are rated from 1 to 10 an extreme ride that will give you an adrenaline rush to not be missed. Families will bond with trust and excitement. During high spring run off times the National Park Service establishes a camp below big drop to rescue people with power boats.
The river trip is 47 miles long.
You start the trip down the Colorado from Moab, Utah. You will travel through colorful Click to continue
